An Apple a Day….

November 7, 2008 at 2:53 pm (Being Frugal, food, funny stuff)

Last night, I was in charge of dinner for the teachers during parent-teacher conferences.  We served up Cafe Rio salads buffet-style and let the teachers help themselves.  It was a huge hit!  The apples I bought, however, were not.  I bought 40 Gala apples and I think only 1/4 of them were taken.  I gave some to the people who were helping me, but still ended up with 20 apples to add to the 3+ lbs. sitting in my fridge.  Anyone have any ideas as to how I can use these up quickly?

It’s P-p-p-porky the P-p-p-pig!

October 28, 2008 at 6:38 pm (family, funny stuff)

Is it just me, or does the Jack-o-Lantern on the right bear a striking resemblance to Porky the Pig?

We carved pumpkins last night with the DD’s.  Pumpkin on the left was designed and carved by DD #1, pumpkin on the right by DD #2.

Chicken Chili

October 24, 2008 at 12:40 pm (food)

This recipe is an old favorite at our house. It’s very easy and is my go-to recipe when a neighbor or friend is sick, has a baby, etc. When I make it for people, they always ask for the recipe.

Chicken Chili

1 10 oz can chicken
1 8 oz can diced green chilies (drained)
2 cans chili beans
2 cans beans drained (whatever you like will do here)
1 c. chicken broth
1 onion, diced
2 t. chili powder

Brown the onion. Add all ingredients to the Crockpot and let it simmer til heated through.

This recipe is even better the next day!

Popcorn, Anyone?

October 20, 2008 at 12:33 pm (Being Frugal)

Grocery Gathering

The other night, Blooshusband popped some microwave popcorn and then dropped a $.75/1 coupon in my lap. I had three other boxes of this popcorn that I’d bought from the same store, so I checked them all and had four coupons! This was a good thing, since this brand of popcorn (Jolly Time) is on sale at Macey’s 10/$10. So we bought 10 boxes and only paid $7 and then discovered that every box had a peelie on the front of the box where you could send in for a coupon for a free box. So really I only paid $.60 a box.
There are also some printable coupons  ( you will have to register to get them) on the Jolly Time website one for $1.50 off and another for $1. Macey’s doesn’t take printables, but this popcorn seems to go on sale for $1/box every few weeks here. So I think I will find a good use for them soon. In the meantime, I’m debating about whether to keep them all for snacks or use some of them for neighbor/friend gifts…

I Got a Good Deal, but Could Have Done Better

October 19, 2008 at 2:56 am (Being Frugal, Uncategorized)

This week at Macey’s, you can get $10 off when you buy any 10 participating General Mills Products for $25 when you use an in-ad coupon. Since FiberOne bars were one of the participating items, I decided to stock up. We’re big hikers so we like these for hiking trips as well as for snacks. I used one $.50 off coupon from the 9/07 insert for one box and got 10 boxes for $14.50, which breaks down to $1.45 a box. Pretty good considering that I normally pay at least $2.50 a box. While we were waiting for them to bring more granola bars to us from the stock room, I took a look at the Chex Mix Bars and the Curves Bars, also included in this promotion. I was pleasantly surprised to see that they were both fairly low in sugar and high in fiber content. AND when I got home I discovered there were coupons for these as well: two for Chex Mix Bars $.50/1 (9/07 and 10/05 inserts) and one for Curves Bars $.75/1 (10/12 insert). So it could have been 10 boxes for $12.75.

Oatmeal Pancakes

October 18, 2008 at 1:11 pm (food)

The Grocery Cart Challenge is doing a recipe swap, and I’m always up for trading recipes. Here’s one of our favorites:

Oatmeal Pancakes
2 c. water
2 c. rolled oats
4 eggs
6 T. vegetable oil

Combine and beat slightly. Let soak for 5 minutes while you gather the remaining ingredients.

1 c. whole wheat flour
1/2 t. salt
2/3 c. nonfat powdered milk
4T. sugar

Add these ingredients to the liquid and oatmeal mixture, then mix until blended. Cook on griddle until bubbled on top and undersides are lightly brown, turn and brown other side.

Buried in Carrots

October 17, 2008 at 8:11 pm (Being Frugal)

This week my local SuperTarget had 1lb. Green Giant baby carrots for $1.29. They also had a coupon for $1 off Green Giant Carrots. So I printed out five, grabbed my Target coupon for $1 off Skippy Peanut Butter and was off! The carrots were $.29 each and the PB was $1.09 after the coupon. Total spent was $2.54. Now, thanks to Money Saving Mom’s post about the cheap carrots and her suggestion of shredding and freezing them, I’m doing just that. I have some bagged in 1-cup amounts for Tomato Barley Soup (celery and tomatoes are on sale this week, too!) And some in 3-cup amounts to make Carrot Cake/Muffins.

More Coupons!

October 15, 2008 at 11:03 pm (Being Frugal)

Since so many coupons came from this site that I’ve used in the last few weeks, I thought I’d pass it on.

These are the coupons I used this week:
The $1 off Muir Glen tomato products allowed me to get diced tomatoes for $.16
The $1 off 32 oz. Yoplait gave me a price of $1.27- that’s almost half off

You will have to register in order to print coupons, but this is one of the best sites for coupons. They actually have coupons for items I will use.

RiteAid is My Moneymaker

October 14, 2008 at 12:35 pm (Being Frugal)

I am really going to miss my gift cards from my Rx transfers from RiteAid. I only have one more to go. But look at what I got yesterday!

All of this was FREE. And the lip balm and Sucrets each have a rebate of $2.99! The cereal was B1G1 and then I got home and discovered the mail-in rebate for the cereal, which is for the entire cost of one box. So add another $4.79 to the money I made!
Plus the Myoplex Bars were buy one get on 1/2 off, which made it $3/2. The lowest price Blooshusband normally gets is $1.75 each when he buys them in bulk.
