I “Heart” Walgreen’s

September 24, 2008 at 6:33 pm (Being Frugal)

So for the last 2 weeks I’ve been paying attention to the sales at Walgreen’s. It’s definitely a great way to pick up a few necessities for a few bucks if you know how to play the game. This week, I tried their EasySaver Rebate Club and made a really cool discovery. When you request a rebate, if you ask for it on a gift card, they will give you a 10% bonus. Also, every subsequent rebate that you have put on that card earns another 10% bonus. So for the items that are FREE after rebate, that’s like not paying sales tax and earning a few extra pennies!

How to Get Rid of Almost Two Pounds of Strawberries in One Day

September 23, 2008 at 1:28 pm (food)

This weekend I made a run to the store to buy some fresh fruit to make one of our favorite desserts. Turns out they were selling strawberries for $.99 a pound, so I bought 8 for $7.92. Yesterday, I used one of those pounds for dessert and another to make smoothies. Two down, six to go!

This dessert recipe is really good. So good that my friend actually requested I bring it for dinner over the weekend. The conversation went something like this:
“I was wondering if you would like to come have dinner with me on Sunday. We could cook out on the grill.”
“I would love to. Shall I bring our own meat and a side dish?”
“Or you could bring dessert. That pie you made last time was really good!”
“Is that a request?”
“Yes, if it’s not too much trouble.”
“No trouble at all.”

New RS & RB Video

September 22, 2008 at 1:02 pm (Music)

A few weeks ago, Ryan Shupe and the Rubberband released a new video for the song Be the One. You can view the video here. You can also see a making of video here which is almost as fun to watch as the real video. And just for laughs, here’s the Corndog Song! (It’s some cheesy video someone else did, but the song cracks me up! )

The Leftovers Dilemma

September 21, 2008 at 1:34 pm (Being Frugal)

Not only do I hate throwing a way leftover oatmeal. I hate throwing a way leftovers period. I also don’t like having the same thing to eat over and over again. I like a lot of variety, so much that Blooshusband once sat me down and very nicely asked if we could eat the same thing for dinner more than once. He likes a little more predictability in his menu than I do.
Of course, what’s a girl to do with leftovers when she wants variety? Make them into something else of course! For example, with leftover chili I make chili stacks. I basically take rice, tortilla chips, cheese, lettuce, salsa, sour cream and leftover chili and stack them on my plate in whatever order suits my fancy. Since I make my meatloaf with lean ground turkey, it’s a little too crumbly as leftovers for sandwiches. Instead, I crumble the meat, mix it with some cream of mushroom soup and make a Shepherd’s Pie. What creative ways do you use your leftovers?

Got 15 Minutes?

September 20, 2008 at 1:41 pm (Being Frugal)

I love oatmeal, but when I make it there’s always leftovers.  It used to bother me that I didn’t know what to do with them to the point that I didn’t make oatmeal very much because I hated just tossing the leftovers.  That was before I found this recipe for basic muffins with a few variations. I use the cereal version a lot for leftover oatmeal. It only takes me 15 minutes to mix up a batch and then I can do something else while they bake.

We Did It!

September 18, 2008 at 12:30 pm (Entertainment, family, funny stuff)

After an hour riding the Trax train and 1 1/2 hours of waiting in line, we got to see the Monet to Picasso exhibit.  It was really quite amazing.  I don’t think I’ve ever seen that many real paintings done by so many famous artists in one place.  It was really interesting to watch DD#2 who has a definite interest in art.  Before entering the exhibit, they give you an audioguide.  DD #2 spent her time looking for works of art with numbers on them so she could dial them in and listen to information about them.  DD#1 and I learned to make ourselves comfortable when we were done with a room and wait for DD#2 to finish.  She made me a little nervous at the Renoir and Van Gogh paintings.  She walked right up to the guard ropes and then leaned over as if to put herself nose-to-nose with the painting!  LOL…I just reached over and yanked her back.  And when we left, we got free passes to come back to the museum another time because of the long wait in line.

Produce Power

September 17, 2008 at 11:58 am (Being Frugal)

This week, I decreased how much I was spending on produce by half.  I was spending at least $50 or more on produce a week. This week I spent $25 and it wasn’t because I was buying less. All I did was look at the sales flyers for the week and then I bought what was on a good sale. (Not everything that a store claims to be on sale is a good price!) Here’s what I got for $25:

  • One bunch of green onions
  • 4.5 lbs. of pears
  • 6 green bell peppers
  • 3 lbs. seedless grapes
  • 1 cantaloupe
  • 1 cucumber
  • 2 bags Dole Classic salad
  • 5.7 lbs. of peaches
  • 5 Roma tomatoes

Items italicized were on sale.  And not only did I get enough produce for a week for my family, but I was able to stock up a little, too!  I have plans to freeze, can, or dry the extras.

Breakfast update:  Yesterday we had the blueberry muffins I made.  Turns out that if you heat a frozen muffin for about 45 seconds in the microwave, it comes out warm just like it’s fresh out of the oven! :)

One Week-No Cold Cereal

September 16, 2008 at 2:28 pm (Being Frugal)

Since I was able to make use of a great deal the Money Saving Mom wrote about over the weekend, I’ve been inspired to see how little I can spend on breakfast this week. Although the sale at Target is off, you can still get the $2 off coupons from Kashi by using the link in Money Saving Mom’s post. Yesterday we had a box of Kashi waffles for breakfast. The girls informed me that the waffles were okay, but they liked my homemade waffles and pancakes much better. It’s a good thing I froze the few left over from this weekend!
Anyway, my little family of four packs away four boxes of Quaker Oatmeal Squares in a week. At $2.88 a box, that’s almost $12 a week. And when I usually have on hand the ingredients to make pancakes, waffles and muffins that just doesn’t make sense. So yesterday, I made a batch of blueberry walnut muffins from a basic muffin recipe and froze most of them after everyone sampled them to make sure they were okay. They were VERY okay, so I hurried up and froze them before they were inhaled by Blooshusband and DD#1!

Tips on Buying Meat and Produce

September 15, 2008 at 1:01 pm (Being Frugal)

Rachael Ray has recently done segments on how to buy meat and how to buy produce.  I thought these were both very helpful.

You can see the produce videohere.

You can see the meat video here.
